I don't have a need for functional threaded RPC anymore.  However, I'm
certain that there are other bugs along these lines in this code.
Every last one of the RPC-related thread variables needs to be checked
for whether it should be something else.

I can do the audit if there's interest, but I don't have the ability
to test it.
