I think that's fixable by warnings.  That is, fix it the way we fix
the gets problem.

Perhaps not.  I think nobody should promote them; they suck.  :)

However, glibc has many functions that nobody should use.  Why should
we promote them?  The fact that SUS says so is not a very good reason,
we don't work for them.
