Which gcc for glibc 2.2.1 on Alpha?

What gcc version is currently recommended for building on Alpha? 
Starting with 2.2.1 (CVS 18-Jan-2001) I'm getting internal gcc
errors when trying to build glibc.  The gcc version I'd been using
was 2.96, CVS 20000925.  The last snapshot, 2.97, CVS 20010122 doesn't
work either.
