build failure on i[56]86, and mips BE success

Well, I did a CVS update, started with a clean build setup, updated
kernel tree and even rebooted the system. I can't reproduce the problem
anymore. I'd blame gremlins, but they don't exist.

Also just wanted to add that the mips big-endian build completed without
problems, using 2.4.2-pre1 kernel headers and gcc 2.95.3/binutils
2.10.1.0.2.
