Versioning mess proved!!!

     I am wondering if this problem was pre-existing but never hit us before. That is
the problem seems to occur when you have to support older-versioned  shared libraries
which have been built as non-PIC objects. Since we never had to support an older
version of glibc in glibc 2.1 this problem never surfaced there.
