Thanks, I've checked in a modified version of the patch.  It should be
faster.

Also, please provide test cases.  It's not enough to have a patch.  I
was really hoping that this would catch on but it seems it doesn't.  I
really would prefer not to play cop and argue about this every time.
Unless you can argue that a test is not practical please *always*
provide a test case.
