I have the exact same problems and its not a make thing as Andreas
Jaeger suggested ( He seems not to be able to reproduce this ) - I tried
make 3.78.1 3.79.

This works for me also ... Thanks ...

Ah - BTW: make 3.78.1, egcs 1.0.3a, binutils cvs + mips patches, linux-mips
