I got glibc-2.0.96 from alpha.gnu.org.  This contains the 2.0.96 test
files, doesn't it?

Yes, it used to work (compiling with -D__NO_STRING_INLINES).  And I
compiled libstdc++ (together with egcs-1.1) with 2.0.95.
