That site looks ok to me. 
Still - it's important that the nesting of the tree is not to deep. I think it's nice to have the full navigator visible on screen always. If - say - node 1 had a bunch of siblings, clicking it would throw nodes 2 and higher below the screen. That might still be confusing.

Oh, and concerning browser compatibility: http://per.bothner.com/tmp/kawa/index.html kinda works in xemacs + w3. There are some font issues, but it's readable and can be navigated. :-)
