I've been procrastinating because a full answer to your question would
involve me updating BRL to work with the latest release, and I've had
other priorities.

However, I did finally get around to verifying that the test suite
passes with setBracketMode(1), as well as the uses of square brackets as
parens I listed in a previous message.  So it works great so far.
