That's probably more a compiler issue...

cvs-HEAD does actually pass all tests on out Opteron systems (Suse
9.3, gcc-3.3.x). And (some of) the code is running blastingly fast,
see my recent post on rng-"benchmarks".

double has the same precision on ix86 and ix86_64 for that matter.
Machines/systems where double is more than 8 bytes are pretty rare --
nowadays even more so;)
