coming version: naive question

The GSL is already standard fare in a number of distributions, e.g. FCX
and RHEL that contain full support for both i386 and x86_64.  I've been
using x86_64 gsl since FC2 (GSL 1.3?).

If you want it to "just appear" in your distribution you may have to
wait -- they will lag a new release by weeks, months or even "forever"
in the case of older RHEL versions.  Supported doesn't mean that they
upgrade right away to the latest version of all provided tools and
libraries, just that they'll fix the older versions for bugs.

However, I expect that source rpms for the latest version will appear
pretty rapidly.  When they do, use yum and create a local repository and
you can install it on e.g. a cluster of Opterons very simply.  Or
somebody on list may be able to direct you to a yummified repository
that will have it ASAP anyway.
