There is plenty of good free software for symbolic algebra (GNU Emacs Calc, Maxima, YACAS, ...) that can output expressions in C or Fortran format. I have used Maxima and GNU Emacs Calc for all my work on GSL. In particular the Maxima OPTIMIZE function is quite useful. -- Brian Gough
