another round of testing

I've had to make some changes, so there is unfortunately another
release candidate:

This is due to a problem in gcc 3.3.1 (and the default compiler in
RH9) where it can suddenly consume huge amounts of memory - with the
effect of crashing the system.  I have had to split up one of the
tests to avoid triggering it.
