Reading and writing GSL random number generators

Hi again!                                                                                 

The code I produced definitely needs some revision, I just noticed                        
I've done some serious error in the size handling.                                        

What type is best to use when you really need one byte (i.e. 8 bit)?                      
Is and will char always be 8 bit?
