Compile problems with GSL1.1.1

Previous to this I have been using a binary version of GSL 0.6 (IRIX tardist
from freeware.sgi.com) but ran into some problems with the API for the
fdf_minimiser functions changing. So I set out to compile 1.1.1
The compile proceeds nicely until it attempts to build .libs/libgsl.so.1.0
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec
`/usr/freeware/lib/gcc-lib/mips-sgi-irix6.5/3.0.1/collect2': Arg list too long
This is of course just after the massive gcc -shared .libs/******** ... line.
(see attached)
Anyone have a quick Makefile fix for this?
Thanks
