Although this stuff all changed in 2.25 and MALLOC_CHECK_ is obsolescent, the
manual still talks about it in a dozen places and the elf and malloc
directories still mess with MALLOC_CHECK_. Someone with good knowledge of the
recent malloc changes should do a 'git grep MALLOC_CHECK_' and fix the
occurrences.
