What is the status of cortex-M3 status in mainline GDB?

I've heard a variety of things - and I am a bit confused.

Can somebody tell me the status of cortext M3 support in mainline GDB 
(ie: 6.8 specifically)

I've seen some references in the source it says archV6/V7 - and THUMB2.

But various mailing list searches seem to say Main line GDB (6.8) does 
not have good cortex M3 support.

Can somebody give me a definitive answer?
