In looking to implmement this I identified another simplification.  I 
think we can reduce things to:

6.2.90_2004-11-23 -> 6.2.90.20041123
6.3 -> 6.3
6.3.0.90_2004-11-25 -> 6.3.0.20041125

i.e., make the date just another part of the version number.

I've attached an attempt at revising the doco to reflect this.
