core file format

I've built gdb-2003-09-09-cvs on i386-pc-solaris2.9 (to get around some 
nasty bugs in 5.3 and earlier with g++ 3.x binaries).  While this gets 
rid of the nasty bugs, I haven't figured out how to build it with the 
knowledge that core dumps are ELF files.  I get the error:

"file" is not a core dump: File format not recognized

If anyone can shed some light on this for me it would be greatly 
appreciated.
