Terminally slow (75 seconds) on some steps

11 seconds per step?  Still painfully slow :-(

What exactly is the system your using?  Can you capture 
strace/ktrace/truss output for GDB doing a stepi?

By `locks' you mean?  If the program is using lots of signals then, 
again, its going to get slow - they have to go through GDB.
