about gdb timeout

when i debug my program using gdb, if i were incautious----didn't using the 
right mode,for example:if my EVB has the picobug monitor,but i typed "target 
mbug com1",a lont time wait then...
so i want to find the reason,because i think if typed "target....",the gdb 
then send the connect command to the monitor,if the monitor didn't response 
in some time,then we can think that the connection failed. it needn't so 
long time....
anyone know something about the problem?
