Setting up GDB

Hello

I'm currently using GDB for remote debugging, but I'm not sure how much I have 
to setup the GDB for it to work. I've looked at the following page:

Could someone please tell me if all these steps are required if I need to work 
with a remote target (e.g. embedded system), or what I actually need to do?.
