Using gdb with emacs

the same problem was identified in the mi.  from memory, the theory was 
that the gui and the mi would both use full paths.  this behavour is 
very different to the cli.

it was also noted that a (gdb) path edit command, that would chop bits 
of a path off, would be needed. (say things get moved).
