The sequence to download a program is:
(gdb) file YOURFILENAME
(gdb) load
Only after the load command your executable will be in the board memory
and the PC will be set to your program entry point (and the stack pointer
to the stack etc.).
Then you can set a breakpoint somewhere and say:
(gdb) continue
