 PS. I actually noticed the problem in the version of gdb that came
 with Red Hat (gdb 5.2.1-4).  I then fetched gdb 5.3 and compiled it locally,
 but the problem persisited.  In all cases the compiler was
 gcc 3.2 20020903 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2-7)
