[commit] Zap obsolete targets

More follow through on 5.3 release.

This eliminates the remaining obsolete files.  Still need to:

- update news to reflect the fallout from this specific patch
- zap all the individual stray bits of obsolete code (but don't let me 
doing this stop someone else zapping something obsolete and in the way :-).

Once all that is done it becomes possible to start on the next round of 
obsoleting.
