Patch to command hook [Revision 2]

Now that Steve (whith help from Eli and Mark - thanks!) is getting his 
post-command hook patch in shape, is time to ask for a last time:

Does anyone has a good reason why we should not do that?  Otherwise it will be
incorporated.
