accumulated Solaris/x86 patch

    This patch is an accumulation of Solaris/x86 fixes by Michael Snyder, plus
    a fix by me to allow compilation on Solaris 7.

    No regressions are evident on i386-pc-solaris2.7, sparc-sun-solaris2.6, or
    sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1.
