I understand that.  But before your change, the chance that GDB would
send a memory write packet larger than the target's debug agent could
handle was rather low.  But with a user setabble maximum packet size,
this becomes a much more likely problem.  

Even if the variable is described as 'for experts only', I believe it
is only prudent that error handling be tightened up.
