Sure but that means running git locally, which makes for yet another
dependency.

If there is not interest on the sourceware.org side, I will probably
maintain a github.com mirror so that a GZ or XZ can be pulled with a
simple download.

Of course if sourceware.org can do this directly and I am failing to see
the buttons, I am all ears!
