Software configurable serial transceiver patch for serial.h

I'd like to submit this patch to allow configuring software selectable
serial transceivers.  I'll leave it up to the maintainers to determine if
this should be controlled by a configuration option.  I can provide an
updated patch if you think it's necessary.
