USB ethernet host driver bug fix/minor improvement

Thanks for looking at this (and checking it in).

Actually, a future patch is going to be the 2.4 kernel driver you wrote,
which Clark Williams and I merged with the 2.2 driver.  We haven't seen
any crashes.
