This very much depends on what your target hardware is (you didn't say,
so we can only give general answers).  Try looking at the ARM9/AAED2000
platform - it has a bit-mapped display that is used not only to display
some graphics, but also a text (CRT) screen for use during RedBoot.  Also
the iPAQ is another example...
