So, I assume that you can talk to this board (RedBoot) via the
serial interface - outside of GDB?

The other thing you can try w.r.t. GDB is "set remotedebug 1" before
you try and connect and it will tell you what's coming over the line.

One last thing (which I sometimes forget and do) is don't try to run
GDB over the serial port and leave minicom (or whatever terminal emulator
you use) active.  That totally confuses things!
