Currently, yes. The I/O functionality is a fairly recent extension to
the synthetic target. Requiring it by default could have caused
problems for people running the synthetic target in a test farm or via
batch scripts, because they might not have the necessary host-side
support installed yet. Hence for now it is necessary to run a
synthetic target eCos application with --io if you want the I/O
functionality. This may change in future.
