[ECOS] modem question

Dear all,
      I wrote a PPP , now I want to test it. I decided following solution:
1 i will buy a modem connecting with pc sierial port.
2 I packet PPP packet into AT command and sent it to modem on PC to test 
dial function and access internet server.

could you give some advice?
please give me a copy of princple of modem dialing,if you have!
