I've got a couple of quick questions. First, background: I have a multi-file, valid, well-formed Docbook 4.1 XML document. (xmllint --noount --noent --valid tells me it's OK, at least). I have converted it into reasonable HTML using the default stylesheets, with a little customization done by stylesheet-knowers here at Ximian. All well and good. My Task: I'm now being asked for a PDF. I have managed to build a sort-of-ugly PDF (some pages have all the text in a tiny column down one side, for example, there are no stylesheet images, and I'll definitely need to customize the variablelists because they give equal space to the term and its explanation, which is not what I want exactly in terms of output, etc. etc.). My Problem: I can't figure out what it was that I installed that made it work, so our stylesheet-knowing-person can't actually reproduce even that much. I have xmlto 0.0.8-3 and the latest versions of tetex, tetex-dvips, passivetex, xmltex, and so forth. My questions: What packages are required for converting a Docbook XML file to a PDF file, since it works for me and not for anyone else? Am I using the recommended procedure, or is there a tool other than xmlto that I should be using? Why would a PDF appear so broken when the HTML didn't? Just the page size? I can see how running out of space would make a entry look pretty broken. a. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I would welcome a tested patch for xmlto that adds support for it to use FOP. And yes, the problem is more likely to be with passivetex than with the stylesheets. PDF format output for refentry looks a lot like you would expect man pages to appear, since that is how a refentry is structured. I can generate an index but most of the page numbers don't get filled in and many that do are wrong. It seems that changing from SGML to XML toolchains is now deemed a good idea. Does anyone know if this will improve the index-generation for printed docs? herman. The answer I was given to this question a couple of years ago was 'find a script called collateindex.pl and follow the instructions in it'. As I say, this 'mostly' worked but not well enough to produce publishable (on paper) indexes. Good docs on the subject seem remarkably hard to come by given what a common problem it must be. Does anyone know if this will improve the index-generation for printed > docs? If you process your XML with the DSSSL tools, then you still must use the collateindex.pl step. If you use the XSL stylesheets and tools, then the stylesheet will generate the index automatically if you have an empty element in your document. I consider that a big improvement. However, the current version of FOP, the major free FO processor, does not know how to collapse duplicate page references and page ranges in an index. Cool. I'm not anymore at Caldera (which now went on the dark side) and I have founded a very Linux-oriented technical translations and writing company (http://www.bureau-cornavin.com). I'll remember to ask you if we happen to need Danish translators. > Audience: What do you want, Eric? > Eric: I want to live in a world where software doesn't suck. > Richard: Any software that isn't free sucks. > Linus: I'm interested in free beer. I have installed the latest packages. I can generate HTML (though I had to hack the main catalog file to have the James Clark//DTD DSSSL Style Sheet declaration) before this would work. When I call docbook2pdf, a tex file is generated, but nothing else happens. This message appears (which also appears when I generate HTML): jade:(invalid location):E: invalid filename "" I have traced the exection to here in backends/pdf: $SGML_JADE -t tex -o ${SGML_FILE_NAME}.tex $SGML_ARGUMENTS if [ $? -ne 0 ] then exit 1 fi Clearly this problem causes jade to exist with an error code and this program exits (with no information). The call to jade looks like this: jade -t tex -o dissertation.tex -i print -d /usr/share/sgml/docbook/utils-0.6.12/docbook-utils.dsl#print -V paper-size=A4 /usr/share/sgml/xml.dcl /home/das/projects/dissertation/v2003/dissertation.xml The indvidual files here all exist. What could be going wrong?
