found the issue.

  $ lftp -d alpha.gnu.org
lftp alpha.gnu.org:~> ls
---- Connecting to alpha.gnu.org (2001:4830:134:3::c) port 21
Interrupt

on my side the ipv6 is not working properly
it is enough to revert to ipv4

lftp alpha.gnu.org:~> set dns:order "inet inet6"
lftp alpha.gnu.org:~> open alpha.gnu.org

lftp alpha.gnu.org:~> ls
