Rebase: still struggling with it

Thank you for the link.

I can imagine what happened that caused the first rebase to fail.  I'd experimented around with rebase some weeks ago and was unsuccessful - presumably because I hadn't turned off sshd.  When I started again today, I didn't know I had to delete the /etc/rebase.* file.
