sometimes ~ and $HOME contain different values

Hi Giorgos,

My ~ and $HOME were never the same until I modified /etc/passwd to point to 
the directory I wanted to use.

(I think there's something in the User's Guide to this effect, though I got 
it from the mailing list.)
