Question...has this been raised before? why domain\user instead of domain/user?

Because <domain>\\user is NOT a file name, but a user name.

Yes.  But only for paths (aka file names).

I don't see any inconsistency in our handling of file names.  If it
bothers you that user names don't accept slash as an alias for
backslash, then submit a patch - but as I don't use user names in file
name contexts, it doesn't bother me enough for me to want to write a
patch.  So, the question is back at you - any plans for you to submit a
patch to fix this?
