I've also noticed this failing for a while now. Using http instead does work,
although it is quite slow and does not work for all repos.
Here's a sample fail:
$ git clone git://git.musicpd.org/master/mpd.git
Initialized empty Git repository in /a/dt/test/mpd/.git/
remote: Counting objects: 33108, done.
remote: Compressing objects: 100% (12495/12495), done.
fatal: read error on input: Bad address.00 KiB | 78 KiB/s
fatal: index-pack failed
