change in gawk from 3.1.5 to 3.1.6

Awk is not really my expertise (haven't used it in years) but shouldn't
that be
awk '{printf ("%6d", 0x22) }' test.txt
I mean that "0x22" usually refers to strings, not hexes.
Works fine without quotations.
