Snapshot speed on managing files

I guess I haven't expressed myself quite right.  Actually I meant to
say there's some *need*" for optimization.  Looking into the code I
currently don't see how to optimize it, either.  I just hope that
somebody else, not wearing the Cygwin blinkers, may have a good idea.
