ls slowness on network shares

The old version was less than a year old and the above does not appear
to be the cause.

I have attached my cygcheck -s -v -r

Here is a piece of an strace of 'ls -l':
    545 201461125 [main] ls 2500 fhandler_base::open:
                                   (p:\a\b\c\d\e\f\g.v, 0x110000)
2954562 204415687 [main] ls 2500 fhandler_base::set_flags: flags
                                   0x110000, supplied_bin 0x10000
