Cygwin build of perl5.8.5 (cygwin-thread-multi-64int )

My problem: the outcome of running what follows on an XP, Swedish SP2.

My environment shows USERNAME different from USER, possibly the reason of
the failing installation.

How shall I start cygwin assuming var. USER and USERNAME contain white
space. I try in my .bash_profile in '/cygdrive/c/cygwin/home/Tom Axehult '
to 
export USER="Tom"
export HOME=/home/$USER

to source .bashrc in '/cygdrive/c/cygwin/home/Tom'
