vim under rxvt : screaming ^G as though keyboard buffer full

Sorry: far too quick to the list. I had set terminal type to 'linux' whilst
exploring something else. It seems that vim doesn't like this at all. OK
when terminal type set back to 'cygwin' or 'rxvt' or ...
