binutils auto-import bug

Status report:
   I just sent in an updated version of Paul's fix, along with mucho 
documentation updates in ld.texinfo describing the bug and workarounds.

I'll let it simmer for a day or so, and then ask (on the binutils list) 
if it's okay for me to commit it.
