Login problems on Win2K

Are you connected to a network or is this a standalone machine.  Could this be 
a domain problem or something in the mkpasswd -l  vs mkpasswd -d.

I don't know - just tossing out ideas.  I did everything you mentioned and was 
able to log on using login just fine.
